ENVIRONMENT
Green Diamond Resource Company takes its responsibility to the environment very seriously. We are committed to practicing sustainable forestry that will meet the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same. This commitment is reflected in our sustainable forestry practices and in the many innovative, voluntary forest and wildlife enhancement programs employed on our timberlands.
Green Diamond is an enthusiastic supporter of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFIsm) Program, a comprehensive set of principles that promote the practice of sustainable forestry. Green Diamond's policy is to meet, or exceed, the requirements of The Sustainable Forestry Initiative®. All of Green Diamond's forestlands have been certified by an independent audit as being in compliance with the SFIsm program.
In addition, all of the products produced by our California Redwood Company are certified under SFI as meeting the stringent guidelines of the SFIsm program.
Our Environmental Principles
- To ensure our forests support a variety of natural resources, including water quality and wildlife habitat and areas of special biological, geological, or historical value, in a manner that takes into account their unique qualities.
- To meet, and often exceed, regulations governing forest practices.
- To protect forests from wildfire, pests, diseases and other damage.
- To continuously improve the practice of forest enhancement and to monitor, measure and publicly report our performance.
- Ensure that the wood purchased by our lumber operations originates from producers who practice sustainable forestry.
Principles in Action
- Green Diamond quickly replants harvested areas, often well before forestry regulations require us to do so.
- Our California forests were the first privately owned forests in the nation to be awarded an Habitat Conservation Plan for the Northern Spotted Owl by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
- The HCP developed for our Washington timberlands protects 51 fish and wildlife species.
- Our Aquatic HCP covering and California forests protects numerous aquatic species.
